Step 9 – Storage

Whenever you store your motorcycle for an extended period, a little tlc up front will save you time and money when it’s time to put that bike back on the road. Lots of motorcycle shops profit every spring from owners’ failure to prep their machines for the off-season. We recommend the following steps to prepare your bike for long-term (more than a month) storage. For a few bonus tips, check out the video down below.

First things first, take your bike out for one last ride. Yes, we mean it -- that’s mandatory step one!  with our unpredictable weather, it is difficult to predict when the next ride may be so make the most of it! on your way home, fill the tank with gas and position it into your desired storage area. Having a full tank is essential for this type of maintenance and your motorcycle will thank you later.

Option 1: Tucking your motorcycle away until spring

Pay-to-play motorcycle storage is available in most towns and cities, and this may be the only option available for you. Many dealers offer this service, as well as other general vehicle storage operations. Pricing will vary depending on your length of stay, and whether you’re paying for other services to be added to your storage. Many dealerships will also do an oil change and otherwise prep your bike for spring as part of the storage deal. Depending what services you’re getting, pricing seems to be consistently in the $200-$300 range, no matter what part of canada you’re living in.

Step 2 Fuel & Engine Treatment

If you haven’t been using opti 2 or something like it don’t worry you can get some seafoam products to treat your fuel and engine instead. This is what i use on my 4 stroke bikes, but it will also work in a 2 stroke engine. It’s actually the same additive for any type of engine, even diesels. I buy one can of motor treatment and one of the top end cleaner and lubricant spray before getting to work along with engine oil and a filter for my bike. I add a little more than the required amount of motor treatment than is required for my size of gas tank because you can’t overdose with it.

The first thing you should do is decided whether or not you’re going to try and squeeze some rides in over the winter. You can still run your bike in the winter, but it is still a good idea to go through the steps. First, replace all of your fluids and keep an eye on them. In the winter, coolant can become acidic in especially cold weather. You should also treat your fuel every time you return from a ride. When you fill your tank back up, pour some treatment in and let the engine run for a minute to make sure it reaches your entire engine.

Step 6 Wash Your Bike

The best and most successful method of winterizing your dirt bike or atv is to not stop riding during the winter months. Unfortunately, many riders live in areas where they really have no other choice but to store their motorized toys for the winter. How you choose to store your machines will make springtime start up a happy day or an expletive filled adventure. What steps should you take to winterize your ride? exterior preparation clean the entire bike with a mild detergent and water. Avoid directly spraying bearings and seals as to not force water into them. If you use a pressure wash, be very careful of this.
